You've got your BaZi chart. Maybe you generated it on Eastern Fate, or a practitioner drew it up for you. Either way, you're staring at a grid of Chinese characters and elemental symbols thinking: "Now what?"
Don't worry. Reading a BaZi chart isn't as intimidating as it looks. Like any language, once you know the vocabulary and grammar, the chart starts speaking to you.
Here's your step-by-step guide.
Step 1: Understand the Structure

A BaZi chart consists of four pillars, each representing a time unit of your birth:
- Year Pillar — Your social circle, ancestry, and early childhood
- Month Pillar — Your career, parents, and young adult years
- Day Pillar — Your core self and marriage (this is the most important one)
- Hour Pillar — Your children, ambitions, and later years
Each pillar has two characters stacked vertically:
- Top: Heavenly Stem (天干) — The visible, external expression of energy
- Bottom: Earthly Branch (地支) — The hidden, internal reservoir of energy
That gives you eight characters total — which is why BaZi literally means "Eight Characters."
Step 2: Find Your Day Master
The Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar is your Day Master — the single character that represents YOU.

There are 10 possible Day Masters:
| Stem | Element | Nature | Metaphor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jiǎ | Wood | Yang | Tall tree |
| 乙 Yǐ | Wood | Yin | Flower vine |
| 丙 Bǐng | Fire | Yang | Sun |
| 丁 Dīng | Fire | Yin | Candle |
| 戊 Wù | Earth | Yang | Mountain |
| 己 Jǐ | Earth | Yin | Fertile soil |
| 庚 Gēng | Metal | Yang | Sword |
| 辛 Xīn | Metal | Yin | Jewel |
| 壬 Rén | Water | Yang | Ocean |
| 癸 Guǐ | Water | Yin | Dew |
Your Day Master is your starting point for everything else.
Step 3: Map the Five Elements
Now look at all eight characters in your chart. Each one belongs to one of the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water.
Count them up. This gives you your elemental distribution — which elements are strong in your chart and which are weak or missing.
A balanced chart has a healthy spread. Most charts are not balanced — and that's where the interesting analysis begins. The elements your chart lacks are often what you need most, and the elements in excess can indicate both strengths and potential problems.
Step 4: Understand the Ten Gods (十神)
This is where BaZi gets powerful. The Ten Gods system describes how every element in your chart relates to your Day Master:
Elements that match yours:
- Companion (比肩) — Same element, same polarity. Peers, friends, competitors.
- Rob Wealth (劫财) — Same element, opposite polarity. Rivalry, boldness.
Elements your Day Master produces:
- Eating God (食神) — You generate it, same polarity. Creativity, enjoyment, expression.
- Hurting Officer (伤官) — You generate it, opposite polarity. Rebellion, talent, unconventional thinking.
Elements that produce your Day Master:
- Direct Resource (正印) — Supports you, opposite polarity. Education, nurturing, wisdom.
- Indirect Resource (偏印) — Supports you, same polarity. Unorthodox knowledge, intuition.
Elements your Day Master controls:
- Direct Wealth (正财) — You control it, opposite polarity. Steady income, spouse (traditional).
- Indirect Wealth (偏财) — You control it, same polarity. Windfall, side income, father.
Elements that control your Day Master:
- Direct Officer (正官) — Controls you, opposite polarity. Authority, structure, career.
- Seven Killings (七杀) — Controls you, same polarity. Pressure, ambition, power.
Each "god" appearing in different pillars tells a different story about that area of your life.
Step 5: Check Chart Strength
Is your Day Master strong or weak? This determines how to interpret everything else.
A strong Day Master has lots of support — same-element companions and resource elements feeding it. Strong Day Masters can handle pressure and wealth elements well.
A weak Day Master lacks support and may be overwhelmed by controlling or draining elements. Weak Day Masters benefit from resource and companion elements.
Chart strength isn't "good" or "bad" — it's context. A weak chart that receives the right support in a Luck Cycle can accomplish extraordinary things. A strong chart without challenges can stagnate.
Step 6: Read the Luck Cycles
Your birth chart is the foundation. Your Luck Cycles (大运) show how the energy changes over time.
Each 10-year Luck Cycle brings a new Stem and Branch that interact with your birth chart. Look at:
- Does the Luck Cycle element support or challenge your Day Master?
- Does it bring the element your chart needs?
- Does it clash with any of your birth pillars?
This is how BaZi makes predictions — not by guessing, but by reading how new elemental energy layers onto your existing chart. Accuracy here depends on using True Solar Time for your birth time.
Step 7: Look for Special Combinations
BaZi charts contain special formations that modify the basic reading:
- Combinations (合) — When certain Stems or Branches pair up, they can transform into a different element entirely
- Clashes (冲) — When opposing Branches meet, creating conflict and change
- Punishments (刑) — Specific Branch combinations that create tension
- Destruction and Harm (破/害) — Subtler forms of conflict
These special interactions add layers of meaning. A chart with many combinations is dynamic and changeable. One with clashes may experience more dramatic life events.
Putting It All Together
Reading a BaZi chart is like reading a story:
- The protagonist — Your Day Master (who you are)
- The supporting cast — The other seven characters (your resources, challenges, relationships)
- The plot — How the elements interact (harmony, tension, transformation)
- The timeline — Your Luck Cycles (when different chapters of your story unfold)
The beauty of BaZi is that no two charts tell the same story. Your eight characters create a unique blueprint that's been yours since the moment you were born.
